1. Low Refrigerant Due to a Leak

A system running low on refrigerant cannot absorb enough heat to cool the air adequately. It will run continuously trying to compensate, but it cannot produce the cooling output the thermostat is asking for. Over time, low refrigerant also causes the compressor to work under conditions it was not designed for, accelerating wear and potentially leading to compressor failure.

Signs refrigerant is the issue:

4. Oversized AC System Short-Cycling

An oversized system brings the thermostat’s temperature sensor (usually in a central hallway) to setpoint very quickly, then shuts off, while rooms farther from the thermostat are still hot.
